Reclaiming the Spirit
Reclaiming the Spirit is an innovative and intimate chamber music program of stunning music, originally to celebrate International Women’s Day 2016. Reclaiming The Spirit offers audiences a thrilling glimpse into the lives and legacy of women in music with a rare opportunity to get up close, experience live classical music, mingle and engage with the musicians and living composers.
In the premiere of this program at Brisbane’s glorious St Mary’s Church at Kangaroo Point, gorgeous works celebrating female idols by featured Brisbane-based visual artist Sarah Hickey were projected, and audiences were inspired by UN Women guest speaker Marryum Kahloon. All proceeds from the cash bar were donated to UN Women, Australian chapter.
Reclaiming the Spirit is a diverse program of short works, from classical muse Clara Schumann fused with contemporary works by Australian living composers Louise Denson, Sarah Hopkins, Elena-Kats-Chernin, alongisde Gabriela Lena Frank and Jennifer Higdon (USA).

Hickey’s series of female idols are inspired by images of women from a variety of contexts, histories and worlds. The complex layering of imagery and patterns depict beauty, spiritual iconography, and the feminine.
